Leaders Interview – George Serafeim, Harvard Business School Professor

Welcome to the second of the Leaders Interview series, where we dive into conversations with some of the innovators shaping the impact valuation landscape. With the new consultation on the Exposure Draft of the Waste Methodology just opened, we invited George Serafeim, Professor at Harvard Business School and Chair of the Impact Value Standards Board (IVSB). He worked with Sir Ronald Cohen on Impact Weighted Accounts, sharing the same profound belief in the importance of impact measurement and valuation, and he explores the challenges and opportunities in profitable purpose-driven organizations.

The Signal Edit – Episode 2

Two themes have dominated nature and finance conversations over the past month, and together they reveal just how much ground remains to be covered: the tension between data, knowledge and wisdom in nature-related decision-making, and the need for more predictable and stable policy signals to help investors embed nature and society into their strategies.

How the newly released TISFD Framework relates to the Capitals Protocol

Sustainability has been on a journey. True sustainable outcomes rely on outcomes that work on a financial, environmental, and, most importantly, human level. Placing people at the center of decision-making is no longer optional: it is a strategic necessity, because if people and communities are not brought along, outcomes simply won’t stick.

The Signal Edit – Episode 1

In recent weeks, we’ve been tracking a growing debate around the mismatch between modeled and real climate and nature risk facing portfolios — and the hidden systemic risks that sit beneath it. The HSBC convening of major UK banks brought this tension into sharp relief. As we see it, this isn’t primarily a disclosure problem — it’s a measurement and application problem.

Leaders Interview – Eelco van der Enden, CEO Accountancy Europe

Welcome to the first of the Leaders Interview series, where we dive into conversations with some of the innovators shaping the landscape. Launching this series is Eelco van der Enden, CEO of Accountancy Europe. He is a true trailblazer in the ecosystem, who joins us to break down his unique approach to the future of accountancy and beyond.

The logic towards success

While visiting Villa d’Este outside Rome, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, a couple of years ago, I was struck by the visual grandeur of the Renaissance palace. A grandiosity that was strengthened by consecutive rooms, with doorways perfectly aligned, creating the compelling vista that a few centuries later was called an enfilade. Peeking through the first door opening, you see room after room after room stretching into the distance, creating a marvellous sense of expectation of an unknown and yet important treasure at the end of the corridor.

Recognizing the hidden value beyond the market – Insights from the Economist Impact Sustainability Week

At the latest Sustainability Week organized by the Economist Impact, out of the two rooms running plenaries, the Energy Transition hall had attracted a full house, whilst the Biodiversity and Natural Capital summit was barely at a third capacity. As it turned out, the audience wasn’t disinterested, they were potentially just lost like the rest of us. The venue outsmarted many people, including our CEO, Mark Gough, as he found himself lining up almost ready to offer an unscheduled keynote to unsuspecting energy listeners.

The Triangle of Action: reflections on SUSTAIN project

Since September 2022, the EU-Horizon funded project The Strengthening Understanding and Strategies of Business to Assess and Integrate Nature (SUSTAIN) has been working to inspire businesses, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies to ensure they incorporate nature in decision-making, to enable  the current economic system to operate within the limits of what our planet can support. SUSTAIN is now coming to an end, and it’s time to reflect on its learnings, achievements, and next steps.

The Davos Shift

There are always two versions of Davos. Outside, on the promenade, it is like being in a chaotic marketplace, with shop fronts turned into advertising windows and meeting places for new tech ventures, people rushing between meetings waving or shouting at each other and no time to stop. The road is jam-packed with black cars, going nowhere. It is noisy, exciting, and exhausting. And then, as soon as one steps inside the conference centre, all the noises vanish and a measured, considered quiet reigns.
